When you pay a Professional in Bitcoin through TheOrangeCove, the payment does not pass into an account we hold and later release. It goes to payment infrastructure the Professional controls. That is what "non-custodial" means, and it changes two practical things for you: nobody in the middle can freeze the money, and nobody in the middle can retrieve it for you either.
This is not a warning against paying in Bitcoin. It is the set of things worth understanding before you do, written for Clients who are considering buying professional services this way.
What non-custodial means here
A custodial platform receives your money, holds it, and pays the seller according to its own rules. Escrow is the familiar version: funds sit with a third party until both sides are satisfied.
TheOrangeCove does not work that way.
- We do not take possession of your Bitcoin or of the Professional's Bitcoin.
- The payment is created and received by infrastructure the Professional controls — a BTCPay Server setup connected to their own wallet.
- We do not hold seed phrases or private keys, for you or for them.
- We cannot access, redirect or return funds unilaterally. There is no balance to reach into.
We are not an escrow provider, and we do not present ourselves as one.
The payment path
Conceptually, a Bitcoin payment for a service looks like this:
Client
→ Professional-specific BTCPay checkout
→ Professional-controlled wallet / infrastructure
TheOrangeCove sits alongside that path rather than inside it. What we do handle:
- Checkout initiation — starting a payment for a specific Listing at a specific price.
- Order association — connecting that checkout to an order so both sides know what was bought.
- Technical event processing — receiving the events the Professional's payment software sends when an invoice is paid, underpaid or expires.
- Status presentation — showing you and the Professional where the payment stands.
Integrating a payment flow does not make a platform a custodian. The distinction matters because it determines who can do what if something needs fixing: technical status questions are ours, money questions are the Professional's. The same arrangement seen from the Professional's side is described in how Professionals accept Bitcoin with BTCPay Server.
What to verify before you pay
Most problems in service purchases are not payment problems. They are agreement problems that only become visible after money moves. Before you pay, get clear on:
- Who you are dealing with. Read the profile properly: what they do, how they describe their work, what they do not do.
- Scope. What is included, and — often more useful — what is not.
- Price. The total, and whether anything is billed separately.
- Deliverables. What you receive, in what form, and what counts as complete.
- Timeline. Start, delivery, and what happens if either slips.
- Revisions. How many, and within what window.
- Refund and cancellation conditions. In writing, before payment, not after.
- The Bitcoin amount and the invoice. Check the amount, the currency conversion shown, and the expiry window.
- The checkout context. Confirm you reached the checkout from the Listing you intend to buy.
- Payment status. Wait for the order to reflect a completed payment before treating the transaction as done.
If a Professional is reluctant to put scope and refund terms in writing, that is information. Act on it.
Irreversibility and refunds
Bitcoin transactions are final. This is a property of the network, not a policy choice of ours, and it has direct consequences:
- We cannot reverse a Bitcoin transaction. No chargeback mechanism exists for us to invoke.
- Refund terms live in your agreement with the Professional. They are the ones who set and honor them.
- A refund is an action the Professional takes. If they agreed to refund, they send a new transaction back to you.
- Value can differ. Network fees and exchange-rate movement between payment and refund mean the amount you receive back may not match the amount you sent, even when both parties act in good faith. Agree in advance whether a refund is denominated in Bitcoin or in a national currency.
- Your statutory rights, where they apply, are unaffected by this article. Consumer protection depends on your jurisdiction and the nature of the transaction. We do not make claims about what applies to you; if the amounts are significant, take qualified advice.
The practical version: treat a Bitcoin payment for services as you would a bank transfer to a party you chose yourself, and put the terms in writing first.
Inquiry, checkout, and why some Listings have no pay button
You will notice that not every Listing offers Pay with Bitcoin. That is expected and unrelated to the Professional's quality or availability.
- Some Listings are inquiry-only by design: you send a message, agree the details, and settle payment however the two of you arrange.
- Starter plan Professionals are inquiry-only.
- Pro and Premium Professionals can offer checkout, but only when their payment setup is connected and verified as working — payment-ready, not merely configured.
- The absence of a checkout button does not mean the Professional is inactive, unapproved or unable to take on work. Send the inquiry.
Where a Professional's setup is incomplete, keeping the Listing inquiry-only is the safer outcome for you: a message costs you nothing, while a half-working invoice can cost real money.
What trust indicators actually tell you
TheOrangeCove reviews applications, profiles and Listings, and it displays some additional indicators. Each has a specific, limited meaning:
- Application approval — the Professional was allowed to continue onboarding.
- Profile approval — their public profile was reviewed and activated.
- Listing approval — that specific service description was reviewed and published.
- Verified — a status assigned manually by TheOrangeCove, independent of any plan.
- Premium — a commercial plan the Professional pays for.
- Featured — an administrator-controlled visibility placement.
None of these guarantees the result of your project, the quality of the work, or that the Professional holds any particular license or qualification. They reduce noise; they do not transfer risk. Verified, Premium and Featured unpacks each one in more detail, including which ones are commercial.
A short checklist before you send Bitcoin
- I have read the profile and the Listing, and the scope matches what I need.
- Deliverables, timeline, revisions and total price are agreed in writing.
- Refund and cancellation conditions are agreed in writing.
- I know the amount, the conversion shown, and the invoice expiry.
- I reached the checkout from the Listing I intend to buy.
- I am comfortable that this payment is final once confirmed.
- I have kept a record of the agreement, the invoice and the transaction.
- If the sum is significant relative to my situation, I have considered starting with a smaller scope.
Non-custodial design removes intermediaries. It does not remove counterparty risk, and it does not remove the need to choose carefully — that part is still yours. Used with ordinary diligence, it is a clean way to pay a professional you have decided to trust.
